The fight to save the lives of young babies intensifies this weekend as a number of organizations and city leaders pledge their support to reduce infant mortality. These are the number of children who die before their first birthday. In Memphis the rate is alarming.  

A young Gilbert father was indicted Thursday in the death of his two-month-old daughter. Twenty-year-old Ricky Martinez has now been charged with first degree murder, child abuse and domestic violence. Police said Martinez was arrested Friday, November 13, after the death of his two-month-old daughter.

A Mercer County Grand Jury indictment has been returned against a Rockford man in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle and the abduction of a toddler that was in the car at the time. The incident occurred on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008. Amanda Prichard of Celina, walked inside Docksider's Marathon to pay for her gas purchase, while he son was still strapped in his child safety seat in the back seat of the car.  

The impoverished Bangladeshi mother of conjoined twins separated last week in a complex operation in Australia says she is overjoyed at the news the twins are doing well, but doesn't want them back. Lovely Mallick, 22, said she gave up Trishna and Krishna soon after their birth almost three years ago because there was no way she and her husband could care for the sickly newborns. "I'm overjoyed with the news that my babies are in good condition," she said by telephone from Khulna, about 135 kilometres  

Child-abuse experts have begun stressing to Iowa parents that crying by babies is normal, instead of just telling them not to shake infants in frustration. When babies are born in the metro area, parents will get an instruction booklet and a video that explains that healthy babies can cry "a lot" during their first five months of life. "There's a lot of crying in this video," said Steve Scott, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Iowa. " Health officials announced the new effort Friday.

Critically ill babies born to South Asian mothers in the UK are nearly twice as likely to die in their first year than other babies, research shows. The infant mortality study was based on more than 40,000 babies admitted into pediatric intensive care in England and Wales between 2004 and 2007. Researchers said that 44% more South Asian infants died before their first birthday than infants of other origins.  

With my first pregnancy , the baby was due on 12th December. And during those nine months, I looked forward to how lovely it would be to spend a first Christmas with my newborn baby. Except it didn't really pan out like that - by 25th December I was still shuffling around, nine and a half months pregnant, wondering if this baby was ever going to turn up.

The Iowa Department of Public Health announced a statewide plan to help prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), a term used to describe a collection of signs and symptoms resulting from the violent shaking or slamming of an infant or young child. SBS is by far the leading cause of young child homicides.
